i don’t cry over news stories very often, but i’m crying over this one. the DVD in question is being distributed by republican partisans. cause and effect? we can’t know unless and until the perpetrators have been identified. but as far as i remember nothing quite like this has happened here before. i see a connection.
here’s the first paragraph of the story:
On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West — the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail — were distributed by mail in Ohio, a “chemical irritant” was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service. The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers. This, apparently, is what the scare tactic political campaigning of John McCain’s supporters has led to — Americans perpetrating a terrorist attack against innocent children on American soil. [Daily Kos]
read the whole article. then, if you agree that there is likely a connection between the DVD and the attack, please send an email to the mccain campaign asking that they publicly denouce this DVD of hate.
what the hell is going on here? this sounds like something the nazis would do. hate and fear and attack are not going to keep anybody safe. from anything.

What do you know about the assailant? How do you know it was a McCain supporter? A Republican? A partisan of either stripe? If there is anything we should all be able to agree on it’s that no one ought to be attacking anyone, and that partisanship should end where lives are endangered.
As for the DVD - it laments and warns against the hatred of Radical Islam for all of us who support liberal Western values. When those on the right or the left throw around terms like ‘nazi’ or ‘evil’ they dilute the term and trivialize the horror. You should be able to win the election without fear mongering…

what do you think? do you believe the assailant was, as the right wing has so lovingly named us, a “bleeding-heart liberal”? come on, this animal came straight out of the we-throw-fetuses-at-pregnant-15-year-olds camp, and they are pure republican.
as far as my lowering the bar on nazism by suggesting that pepper spraying infants is an act worthy of the third reich, where do you draw that particular line in the sand? does there have to be a wholesale ethnic cleansing first?
The term “bleeding heart liberal” describes a philosophy of subsidizing failure because liberals think society is to blame for the choices people make, and what is needed is monetary sympathy rather than high standards. Because leftism has been the inspiration behind murderous movements like communism (USSR) and national socialism (Nazis), whenever we hear of political violence, history proves suspicion belongs focused on the left. But who knows, it could the same Republicans that a drunk and bitter Randi Rhodes insists attacked her outside of a bar last year. You might have to be as drunk to find them though, LOL…
Yes, there does need to be wholesale violence first - Nazism equals holocaust and Brown shirts. A single case of pepper spraying babies is the work of thugs. We have yet to know who they might be, so until we know, let’s agree to join in condemnation.
Why does it matter when political rhetoric prostitutes historical evils to disparage ideological opponents? Because it dilutes the remorseless evil of Nazism by comparing it to political enemies who disagree with you. To the educated, we ought to know better than to make such charges. But to those who have no knowledge of history, comparisons like this drive them to join a growing vanguard of a generation that is doomed to repeat history.
