listen to what comes out of his mouth and help me figure out which it is:
once bitten -- twice shy, right? clinton (bill) talked a lot of shit about gay rights until he moved into the white house, where he went all “don’t ask, don’t tell” on us. is that what obama is doing with this rick warren invocation? well, letters like this one are already pouring into change.gov.
lindsay beyerstein’s got a very interesting take on it — that warren is more a political operator than a man of the cloth, and as such shouldn’t be given such a bloated vote of support from the incoming administration, and the nation provides a comprehensive overview of his other odious social and political positions. gays aren’t the only group he hates (yes, hates, donuts notwithstanding).
if there were any other encouraging signs for the GLBT community, this slap in the face might not be generating such a mighty backlash. but obama’s cabinet as announced/projected at present includes three Latinos, two Asian Americans, one African-American, three women, and, yes, two Republicans. not one out queer.
there’s little doubt that the leaked invocation transcript mysteriously manifesting at various washington fax machines is a hoax. but it’s a scary hoax, because he COULD say something exactly like that. nobody’s gonna leap up and snatch the microphone from his sweaty, homophobic little hand.
john amato has called on warren to withdraw. the firedoglake community has submitted a very astute list of questions to the obama administration. david neiwert has put together an alternative list of “inclusive” choices that includes sarah palin, rush limbaugh and darth vader.
and cenk uygur’s got a fantastic piece on huffpo, not another word about gay marriage until they execute an adulterer. apparently the bible has a lot more to say — and much harsher words — about sleeping around than it does about faggotry, and uygur is calling the bible-belters on it.
jane smiley eloquently (is she ever anything but eloquent) tells joe biden she wants her fucking money back after getting the latest campaign beg letter, and the rude pundit gives the issue his rudely unique and energetic attention.
listen, you don’t have to be queer to support the ouster of warren from this inauguration, and here’s a straight old white man to tell you so.
okay, you’re onboard. what can you do? well, it’s the usual: make calls, write letters, talk shit. here’s who to talk it to:
plenty of contact resources from the billerico project, and a petition from equality california. there’s also a fast-growing facebook group with a lot of action resources, if you belong to FB please do sign up for this group.
did i miss anything? if you know of any other protest resources or direct actions planned, please tell me about them.

My answer is he’s insane. As a teacher I work with people with mental retardation and they would never say some of the off the wall shit that he spews. This guy is insane. After viewing this my wife and I came to the conclusion that he is a closeted, self loathing, tormented gay guy who is hiding behind a facade. I read that he champions the cause of fighting AIDS, and last time I checked most evangelicals could care less about the AIDS epidemic. And what was up with all that talk about reigning in one’s impulses? That’s total closeted denial talk.
Yup, he’s gay… really really gay… which would be great if he would just embrace it, and stop spewing hate. Does anybody else see it?

He’s another Christian crazy with political ambition. I bet he has a wide stance at airport men’s rooms, too.
Jackie,
Warren is either gay, insane, or he’s having affairs with all the young women in his congregation. I do think he’s insane because I believe all evangelicals are insane. There beliefs are nothing short of delusional. Whatever it is, we’re going to eventually hear an “I’ve sinned against you” video over and over again when he confesses on camera.
Obama is naming an openly gay Secretary of the Navy, Bill White (Rachel Maddow Show on Air America Radio 12/23/08). He’s the most qualified for the job. It will put “don’t ask don’t tell” on the front burner and will result in its repeal by the end of the first term of the Obama administration. It would be faster, but to be practical, the country has a lot of other, more pressing problems, and there are a lot of bridges that need to be built within the military and within society toward gay rights tolerance. The military can be very intolerant of any kind of change. I know, I grew up as a Navy brat, although my dad would have been for accepting gays into the military. If we have the right to be Americans, we have the right to fight and die for America openly.
I am heartened that if Prop 8 were on the ballot today, it would fail hands down. Our activism came a couple of months too late. Michelle Obama is for equal gay rights, and I believe she will have a big positive influence on the President surrounding gay rights issues.

I love Ann Curry’s face in this. It just screams, “Shut the fuck up and stop spewing inane bullshit.”
