thank you, michael heart: “song for gaza”

by jackie sheeler on January 14, 2009

michael heart wrote a beautiful and hopeful song in support of people living in gaza:

please sign amnesty international’s petition to pressure bush & his court of fools to call for an end to the humanitarian crisis in gaza.

join oxfam america’s call for an immediate cease-fire.

these aid agencies are making a difference (insofar as they can, insofar as they are allowed to). take a look at their summary reports and make a donation if you are so inspired. every couple bucks helps:

american red cross evacuation efforts

doctors without borders reports on the way humanitarian aid is being blockaded

an oxfam worker and his family were bombed out of their home in gaza yesterday. oxfam continues its work on behalf of all the victims in the area and is seeking donations.

silence

so, don’t read the news. it’s too depressing. present gaza death toll stands at 984. lebanon and israel are now swapping bombs and artillery, and this sideshow may well escalate into a second front. bin ladin has called, from his hidey-hole, for total jihad against israel. the cowardly democratic senate broadcasts its approval of the slaughter. an iranian aid ship has been turned back at sea; in the meantime, gaza is almost out of water — and has almost no room left to bury all the dead.

how michael heart found it in himself  to write such a hopeful song for the palestinians in the midst of all this i cannot imagine. but i applaud his creative and uplifting heart.

I think you are thinking like sukrat, but I think you should cover the other side of the topic in the post too…

It is easy to write songs condemning something or someone.
How about exploring a solution for what is going on in
Palestine /Israel? It is a lot more brave to talk to people from
the various sides and explore the underpinnings. Look at the Palestinian poet
Fareed Bitar and what he is doing with the Fatoosh Ensemble.

i agree that it is extremely easy to condemn the airborne slaughter of thousands of people penned like animals in a trap.

yes, there are complex issues surrounding israel’s relationship with its neighbors. but none of them — in fact, nothing on earth — justifies the actions that were taken against gaza. there is no excuse or historical justification for it. none.

It’s truly a beautiful song for a horrible tragedy.
