After hearing so much negative in the media about the teaching profession, it was good to read this post and see how passionate many of our country's teachers are. A few standouts had a huge impact on me and I have never forgotten it.

Wise words from Bette O'Callahan. I taught for 46 years and always tried to expect and induce the best from every student until he or she proved unable to excel. As a male English teacher, I had more "best" students who were female than male. I helped my students, regardless of gender, race, or religion, get jobs or attend graduate school in many fields, and most have done well in life.

"I teach screenwriting and consistently notice the different regard that I feel for my male and female students. No matter how “enlightened” I think I am, I find myself having higher expectations of the guys in the class."

Funny that... in all of the years I have trained people, I expect the best from everyone but especially the women. Good letter but she needs to get her head round the fact that as long as women think as she does, in the quote above, they will reinforce the strength of that glass ceiling. As women and especially those of us who are also mothers, it is our responsibility to engender a firm belief in our children, both male & female that they have equal abilities. My daughter, who is also an artist is the same age as the writer & she has faced that glass ceiling many times but she does not have higher expectations for men.
