this blog has been inactive since the end of 2009. why? because i was more sad than angry.
sad’s not the right word. frustrated? not exactly. let me put the back of my hand to my forehead like some 50′s-era starlet and say “Oh! it’s the FUTILITY of it all!”
after working so hard to elect a president that we had every reason to expect would be 180° different from the last one, then waiting hopefully, then impatiently, then… realizing that it was business as usual and there was nothing, after all, to wait for. nothing’s going to get better.
do i believe that this is because obama lacks integrity? no, i believe he has more integrity, and intelligence, than any president in recent memory.
but i’ve also come to believe that the president of the united states is not in charge of the united states, and that it’s as true for obama as it was for bush, clinton, bush, and reagan.
the united states is governed in accordance with the special interests of big business. period. the “will of the people” is mythology, dusty and old and over. it’s not a democracy, but a state run entirely along capitalistic principles.
we reward dishonest and devious financial institutions by bailing out their failures with tax dollars. corporations that, for the most part, don’t even pay any taxes themselves.
we fix our healthcare system by bending over for big pharma. we close st. vincent’s hospital and effectively outlaw midwivery in NYC.
we allow oil companies to blatantly ignore every regulation and safety precaution in their drilling practices, and when the big disaster strikes, we allow them to “handle” it, unfettered and unsupervised.
and people lose their unmortgaged homes over water bills totaling less than the cost of some fancy 5th Avenue shoes. this last one shocked me.
does it shock you?

I am so glad you are back!
I have always respected your take on things. You back your idea’s and thoughts up with valid statistics and news facts.
Every single one of us is one illness or late payment away from foreclosure. No one is safe.
I am not sure that a President isn’t a large part of running a country, and I so much want to believe that a strong leader is still a valid leader, but it is hard to argue the power of big business.
Bravo, Jackie- and pklease keep this blog going.
Welcome back! Good to hear you tell truth to power again.
Is it a sign of hope that Dem voters in PA rejected Pres. O. & Gov. Rendell to ditch Specter and nominate Adm. Sestak? Even a Sen. Sestak, though, won’t stop Big Oil, Big Finance, and Big Pentagon, etc.
Glad you’re back, JS.
Oh how I have missed you.
Wow! Glad I checked in.
Keep up the good work.
This is just beyond words. The companies are criminal, wheeling and dealing with so many lives. And the people putting her out are just “doing their jobs.” I couldn’t do that job. Unbelievable.
Hey, Jackie. All I can say is, “me too.” I haven’t been able to post much, just don’t even know what to say. But someone told me a couple weeks ago that those of us with a different vision for this world need to keep “putting that vision out there.” So, I’m trying to find words again. I bet there are others out there who have been simply dumbstruck. I’m hoping we can find our voices again, even if things around us are going from bad to worse. Maybe we need to speak now more than ever (if only we can figure out what the hell to say about it all). Peace.
